چکیده

We study the effect of uncertainties in the proton-capture reaction rates of the NeNa and MgAl chains on nucleosynthesis due to the operation of hot bottom burning (HBB) in intermediate-mass asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars. HBB nucleosynthesis is associated with the production of sodium, radioactive 26Al and the heavy magnesium isotopes, and it is possibly responsible for the O, Na, Mg and Al abundance anomalies observed in globular cluster stars. We model HBB with an analytic code based on full stellar evolution models so we can quickly cover a large parameter space. The reaction rates are varied first individually, then all together. This creates a knock-on effect, where an increase of one reaction rate affects production of an isotope further down the reaction chain. We find the yields of 22Ne, 23Na and 26Al to be the most susceptible to current nuclear reaction rate uncertainties.

Reaction rate uncertainties and the operation of the NeNa and MgAl chains during HBB in intermediate-mass AGB stars

Context. We test the effect of proton-capture reaction rate uncertainties on the abundances of the Ne, Na, Mg and Al isotopes processed by the NeNa and MgAl chains during hot bottom burning (HBB) in asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars of intermediate mass between 4 and 6 M⊙ and metallicities between Z = 0.0001 and 0.02. Aims. We provide uncertainty ranges for the AGB stellar yields, for inclusi...

Nucleosynthesis in evolved stars with the NACRE∗compilation

Nucleosynthesis in evolved (RGB and AGB) low-mass stars is reviewed under the light of the reaction rates recommended in the NACRE compilation (Angulo et al. 1999). We use a parametric model of stellar nucleosynthesis to investigate the uncertainties that still exist nowadays on the nuclear data and to give a critical point of view on the resulting evolution of the chemical abundances. We discu...

Non-explosive hydrogen and helium burnings: Abundance predictions from the NACRE reaction rate compilation⋆

The abundances of the isotopes of the elements from C to Al produced by the non-explosive CNO, NeNa and MgAl modes of hydrogen burning, as well as by helium burning, are calculated with the thermonuclear rates recommended by the European compilation of reaction rates for astrophysics (NACRE). The impact of nuclear physics uncertainties on the derived abundances is discussed in the framework of ...

On the internal pollution mechanisms in the globular cluster NGC 6121 (M4): heavy-element abundances and AGB models

Globular clusters display significant variations in their light-element content, pointing to the existence of a second stellar generation formed from the ejecta of an earlier generation. The nature of these internal polluters is still a matter of debate: the two most popular scenarios indicate intermediate-mass asymptotic giant branch (IM-AGB) stars and fast rotating massive stars. Abundances d...

The Production of Sodium and Aluminum in Globular Cluster Red Giant Stars

We study the production of Na and Al around the hydrogen shell of two red-giant sequences of different metallicity in order to explain the abundance variations seen in globular cluster stars in a mixing scenario. Using detailed stellar models together with an extensive nuclear reaction network, we have calculated the distribution of the various isotopic abundances around the hydrogen shell at n...
